Dr. Abecassis is chief of the division of Organ Transplantation and medical director of the kidney and liver transplant programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and professor of Surgery and Microbiology-Immunology and the J. Roscoe Miller Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He is actively involved in training medical students, residents and fellows. A member of Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Dr. Abecassis is board certified in surgery. In addition to his clinical and teaching activities, he is the principal investigator and a member of the steering committee of the Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation Cohort Study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This seven-year study will provide much-needed data on living donor liver transplantation. In addition, Dr. Abecassis is the principal investigator and a member of the steering committee for the NIH-funded Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation Study. This five-year study will investigate molecular markers in the blood and serum that predict and accurately diagnose rejection and ischemia/reperfusion injury of transplanted organs. Dr. Abecassis also is a member of various local, regional and national committees on organ procurement, distribution and allocation and is a member and officer of many national and international professional transplantation and surgical societies.
